We know that House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood and that it is co-created by Martin and Ryan Condal. The show will take place 300 years before Game of Thrones and follow members of House Targaryen over 10 episodes.

It was first announced back in October 2019 via the Game Of Thrones twitter:

Since then it has been announced that the show is expected to premiere sometime in 2022. We know that Screenwriter Ryan Condal will be writing some of the episodes. While Miguel Sapochnik will direct some of the episodes. The two were behind many of the great battles of Game Of Thrones such as “Battle of the Bastards”.

Recently the first cast member was announced for the show “House of the Dragon”. Paddy Considine was announced to play King Viserys Targaryen. All we know about him is that Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal.

Other characters will include Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Queen Alicent Hightower, Prince Daemon Targaryen and Aegon II Targaryen, it is yet to be announced who will play them.

“The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories … We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George” HBO programming president Casey Bloys said during an HBO Max unveiling.

The show has been said to not just explore the Targaryens’ history. But we will also get the surprising origin stories behind different iconic houses. There’s so many references to the main series that can be done and used. It’s good to see HBO decided to move forward with this prequel.

We are still waiting to hear more about the show and the new characters. Hopefully we will hear more from the creators and potential cast soon. Until then all we can do is wait.
