Nearing 3 million views on Youtube, the Moschino Barbie advertisement has caused quite the controversy. For the first time in 56 years, Mattel has featured a boy in their advertisement in their collaboration for Moschino. A mohawked blonde boy declares “Moschino Barbie is so fierce”.
The advertisement parodies 1980’s commercials and celebrates how boys and girls alike play with Barbie.Many are praising the company for challenging the stereotype that playing with dolls is a ‘girls thing’. However there were also critics suggesting that these well-known dolls should not be marketed to young boys.
The Moschino Barbie sold out in less than an hour and retailed for $150.
