The French government have passed a new law intended to ban really thin models from working in France. This means that models will need to provide a doctor’s certificate showing a body mass index (BMI) appropriate for the job. To reinforce this new law, any model or client that breaches it can face up to 6 months prison and a fine up to 75,000 euros (over AUD$110,000).
The law also states that images must be marked as “retouched photograph” where models have been digitally edited to appear larger or smaller. Of course failing to do so will also result in a nice fine of up to $40,000.
It is unsure when the BMI law will be implemented but the retouched photograph law is set for January 2017.
