With the multitude of Batman and Superman movies and countless tv shows and games based on the two iconic characters, it seems high time that we get a new Supergirl movie.
The previous incarnation of Supergirl on film was in 1984. The film was directed Jeannot Szwarc and starred Helen Slater, Faye Dunaway and Mia Farrow. It was made as a spin-off to the popular Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve.
This widely beloved character has also been the centrepiece of the successful CW series Supergirl. Melissa Benoist plays the role of Supergirl AKA Kara Zor-El, cousin to Kal-El AKA Superman. However, the upcoming film will have its own unique take on the character and will in no way be connected to the ‘Arrowverse’ in which Benoist’s Supergirl exists.
Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have hired Oren Uziel, the writer of the hit comedy 22 Jump Street (2014) and The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) to write the script for the film.
The choice to feature female superheroes as the stars of their own movies has been a relatively recent one for the DC cinematic universe. Last year Wonder Woman (2017) was released with an overwhelmingly positive receptive by critics and fans.
Wonder Woman has long been the token female of DC’s Justice League while Black Widow has been the token female of Marvel’s Avengers.
Both studios have several changes planned for upcoming movies to ensure greater gender diversity. Scheduled for DC is a Batgirl movie, a Harley Quinn standalone film and a rumoured Birds Of Prey movie which would focus on the characters of Harley Quinn, the Huntress, and Black Canary.
Marvel has also slated a number of lead female superhero movies to be made. Among them are a Black Widow standalone film, Captain Marvel (2019) starring Brie Larson and a Ms. Marvel movie which would star Marvel’s first Muslim superhero.
A release date has not yet been for the latest Supergirl movie.
