We know full well that Johnny Depp is not averse to flaunting his Captain Jack Sparrow (for it is Captain Jack Sparrow) character in public. The story of him showing up at an English primary school in full garb to answer a fan letter is pretty legendary, as is his similar appearance at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital where his daughter was treated.
He’s now gone and done it again on a much bigger scale to promote the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, by spending the day at the Pirates ride at Disneyland in Anaheim interacting with fans on the ride dressed fully as Captain Jack.
Fair to say, there were some less-than-muted reactions to Depp’s appearance, with those who had the joy of seeing him taking to Twitter to profess happiness, surprise and even renewed belief in the supernatural.

As mentioned, this stunt was surely intended to drum up excitement for the (reported) final saga in the adventures of Captain Jack, and while it is true that the series has done all it can, I for one will be sorry that there will be no more of Captain Jack’s wittering to enjoy.
As the seemingly endless controversy surrounding Johnny Depp doesn’t look like ending any time soon, I will be glad of the opportunity to remind myself of the fact that beneath any alleged personal shortcomings, the man is a very funny actor.
May he never be short of rum again.
