Our favourite British Royal family has had their first same-sex wedding!
Lord Ivar Mountbatten, who’s the Queen Elizabeth II’s third cousin, once removed, married James Coyle in a small family ceremony at a private chapel, nestled on the former’s Devon estate.
Before the ceremony Lord Mountbatten gave us a small sneak peek of their rings, showing how excited they were for D-Day.
While possible pictures of other Royal family members were nowhere to be seen, we did receive one from their dog. Dolled up in rainbow coloured specs and ribbon, Rosie was cuteness herself.
We eventually got pictures of the newly wed couple themselves. They both wore handsome velvet blazers, while James Coyle wore plaid printed trousers.
He commented that the wedding day was amazing despite the bad, but typical, weather. Mountbatten even went on to give a thank you to those who played a role in the wedding.
“Well we did it finally! It was an amazing day despite the miserable British weather. Fabulous service conducted by Trish Harrogate, chief Registrar for Devon, who set the perfect but lighthearted tone for what is a serious occasion. The accompanying gospel choir were amazing. Thank you so much to Bristol’s Teachers Rock Choir for your superb singing.”
He especially expressed his gratitude towards his 3 daughters from his previous 16-year marriage to Penny Mountbatten, who were “so understanding and supportive, without their support this could never have happened!”
His ex-wife, with which the Lord is on friendly terms with after the divorce, even walked him down the isle during the ceremony.
While it seems that his ex-wife has been understanding of his relationship with his partner, Lord Mountbatten has previously discussed the struggles he felt as a closeted gay man in a heterosexual relationship.
“I had a really happy childhood but I could never tell my parents I was gay,” Lord Mountbatten told the The Daily Mail in June, adding “In 15, 20 years’ time people will struggle to understand how we came to be having such conversations.”
“People will look back and say, ‘What’s the big deal?’ But for our generation it was.”
Penny in turn told The Daily Mail in an interview how much Mountbatten has changed:
“What I don’t think Ivar realises is how much he has changed as a man since he ‘came out’. James is hugely responsible for that because he’s so much fun. Ivar is so much more relaxed these days. He’s so much kinder. He’s become a great cook… He probably wasn’t even aware that by keeping his sexuality a secret it was really quite tormenting him. Now it’s ‘out’ he’s a completely different person. Everybody says they’ve never seen him happier.”
If we take a look at his IG history and the broad smiles the couple is wearing, it’s safe to say that they’re indeed very happy. Mountbatten even extended the cutest message to his new husband on Instagram: “And finally the biggest thank you to James for being just perfect…”
