The film will begin shooting this September. Many members from the original cast and crew will be returning including actors Joanne Froggatt, Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith, and Hugh Bonneville. The show’s creator Julian Fellowes wrote the film’s script and Brian Percival who directed many episodes of the show, will also return to direct the film. Carnival Films will be the producer.
Downton Abbey’s executive producer on the show, Gareth Neame, commented:
“When the television series drew to a close, it was our dream to bring the millions of global fans a movie… Now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production. Julian’s script charms, thrills and entertains, and in Brian Percival’s hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as Downton comes to the big screen.”
The overwhelming success of the show has led it to becoming a popular reference to make in comedy tv shows with Holt from Brooklyn Nine-Nine being a fan, Manny from Modern Family marathoning episodes and Mindy in The Mindy Project joking about the desperation of Downton fans in trying to avoid spoilers.
