Last week Matthew Bellamy, the singer and guitarist of English rock band Muse, was the subject of (another) internet death hoax. But fortunately for Muse fans, the singer is alive and well. In fact, today is his 39th birthday.
Muse has always been a polarising band. Most of their devoted fans are sci-fi loving types who appreciate heavy yet intricate guitar riffs and drums. People love to hate them and hate to love them. Except Twilight author Stephanie Meyer, who proudly loves Muse to death.
Lyrics from the song ‘Time is Running Out’ by Muse are literally used as dialogue between Bella and Edward in the Twilight books. The song has supposedly romantic lyrics about ‘sucking’, life, and death. Stephanie Meyer could not have been more literal with her interpretation. Without Muse, there is no Twilight. Can you even imagine?
I recently realised that I own 6 Muse albums and faced a bit of an existential crisis. I definitely bought a lot of CDs in my teens but when it comes to Muse, I don’t completely agree with the musical tastes of 13-year-old me. So much of Muse’s offerings are cringeworthy, but there are also plenty of elements within their music that I can and still appreciate. I’ve outgrown ‘Knights of Cydonia’ but ‘Invincible’ is still an absolute tuna (lame flamboyant guitar solo and all).
In 2011, Matt Bellamy had a son with actress Kate Hudson, daughter of Goldie Hawn. Their son is called Bingham “Bing” Hawn Bellamy. Which means he is named after a (lesser) search engine.
Bing goes to the same school as the kids of Nine Inch Nails’ frontman Trent Reznor. And apparently, these children may or may not start a raging rock band one day soon. So stay tuned for that.
Bellamy and Hudson were engaged but split in 2014. All’s good in the hood though, as they continue to happily co-parent Bing. They also just listed their 1.5 million pound mansion in Lake Como, Italy, so they’ll soon be rolling in cash.
Matthew Bellamy of Muse may not have gotten his wedding but today is his day and he certainly isn’t dead. Happy birthday Matt, hope it’s a good one!
