28-year-old, Leisha Evans is being hailed as an icon for the Black Lives Matter protest of the 21st century.

This powerful image was captured this weekend at a Black Lives Matter protest in Louisiana following the murder of Alton Sterling last week. Sterling was shot repeatedly by police outside of a convenience store in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Yet another innocent civilian murdered by police in America.

Leisha Evans travelled from New York to participate in the protests in Baton Rouge. She explains that she was ‘overcome with emotion’ while watching the protests on TV and decided to travel and take part. Well, she definitely did take part and in a beautiful and powerful way.

The image shows her strength, determination and lack of fear whilst police approach her in a hurry. She was arrested after this image was taken but has since been released. She was one of 100 people arrested at the protests on the weekend.

This comment captures the beauty and strength of this image:

After yet another killing of a African- American civilian by police, communities nationwide continue to come together to protest against the police brutality towards black civilians.

Kim Kardashian spoke out about the murder and the Black Lives Matter rally saying that: “I want my children to grow up knowing that their lives matter. I do not ever want to have to teach my son to be scared of the police, or tell him that he has to watch his back because the people we are told to trust – the people who “protect and serve” – may not be protecting and serving him because of the colour of his skin.”
