In 2013, teenager Ethan Couch whose parents own a multi-million dollar sheet metal company had been drinking and taking valium with friends. An idiotic move to get behind the wheel resulted in him killing four people and left one of his passengers only able to communicate by blinking his eyes.
When he faced court months later, his defence lawyer got him out of the impossible. With the help of a psychologist he managed to successfully argue that Couch suffered from “affluenza”. He claimed that Couch had an emotional age of 12 and due to his parent’s adversarial relationship he struggled in his adolescence.
Basically saying that because he was given toys instead of love, then jail time is not required. He was instead sentenced a 10-year probation period where he could not drink alcohol, drive a car or take drugs.
This week footage emerged showing Couch involved in a game of beer pong with the uploader captioning it “Ya boy Ethan Couth violating probation. I got more if you want it. @CityofBurleson @TarrantCountyDA. A judge will now determine whether or not Couch has broken his probation.
Is affluenza real or is it just an excuse for the rich to get out of their crimes?
