After a referendum held in May, The Republic of Ireland now recognises same sex marriage after the law has passed.
This makes Ireland the first country in the world where same sex marriage is legal.
The new legislation doesn’t just effect couples who wish to be married. Couples who have married abroad also will be recognised as married by the Irish government.
The new legislation only applies to civil marriages. This law does not force any church or religious organisation to perform marriage ceremonies.
The first of many I say!
