90 minutes passed and there still hadn’t been a single goal. You can imagine the screams, tears and anxiety that filled the Stade de France. The game went into extra time where a phenomenal goal from striker Éder won Portugal its first European championship. Fans were shocked because Éder wasn’t much of a star when he played for Swansea, but he showed us exactly what he was made of.

After an early knee injury, the Portuguese side lost their captain, Cristiano Ronaldo 24 minutes into the game. Ronaldo’s words to substitute Éder encouraged him to take home the win 1 – 0.

“[Ronaldo] told me I would score the winning goal for the team,” the striker told O Jogo. “He gave me this strength, this energy and it was vital.

“It was a goal I’ve been working for from the first minute of the Euros.”

In the 109th minute, Éder perfectly marauded forward before uncorking a low shot from 25 metres.

Twelve years ago, when Ronaldo just 19, his side was beat by Greece in the final in Lisbon. The captain broke down in tears at the final whistle and later had the honour of lifting the European Championship trophy for the first time in Portugal’s history.

France didn’t see this coming but I guess you could say Portugal succeeded in blowing their minds!
