Happy international women’s day to all the women out there! Let’s use this awesome opportunity to talk about feminism. Feminism doesn’t mean burning your bras and hairy armpits the way everyone imagines, but you know what I am so down with both of those! Because bras are basically prisons for your boobs and studies are coming out talking about their uselessness (most of the time) and have you seen the awesome sh*t people are doing with their armpit hair? I mean I think fluoro pink armpit hair is just all kinds of fun.
Anyway back to the point, feminism, it is more than those things and not confined to those one-dimensional spaces. Feminism put simply is the pursuit of equality. It is for every girl and every boy all over the world to know that they have the right to equality, to freedom, to a voice and to access. It is not about some angry ladies taking over the world run by old white dudes and replacing it with old white female dudettes. Rather focussing on fostering equality beyond the shallows of white privilege and into the depths of pursuing equality amongst the sexes in the big wide world. It is a fundamental stepping stone for us to realise many human rights the world over.
This international women’s day think about why you are lucky and celebrate that. Also, take a moment to think about why we need international women’s day both in Australia and internationally.
