No one can forget the infamous interview in February 2015 when West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle made an attempt at sports journalist Mel McLaughlin on national television. All the major news sites blew up over Gayles proposition on McLaughlin to come out for a drink later before quickly adding, “Don’t blush, baby.” McLaughlin was covering the Big Bash League for Channel 10 coverage.
This however wasn’t the first time he’s treated a woman indecently. In January of this year, he flashed his genitals to a poor lady who was working with the West Indies team during the World Cup last year. The woman headed into the team dressing room to get a sandwich. When she walked in, she didn’t expect to see Gayle and his nether regions on display. He proceeded to ask the stunned woman, “Are you looking for this?”
It comes as no surprise that Gayle hasn’t been able to shut his arrogant mouth. Less than a month ago he boasted about having a “very, very big bat” to English reporter, Charlotte Edwards. He was also reported as saying, “You think you could lift it? You’d need two hands.” He tooted his own horn saying 10,000 women threw themselves at him and asked Edwards how many black men she’d been with.
The Chris Gayle incident has opened up a whole can of worms regarding the treatment of professional women, particularly in areas of the media where women are constantly rated for their levels of attractiveness. Why do men feel they can proposition and make skin crawling advances at a woman who’s just trying to do her job?
In a recent interview with The Guardian, he has the audacity to lay the blame back on McLaughlin, believing she came off looking worse. Gee, he is one deluded man. Gayle said “You’re a woman in an environment with men. You’re good looking. What do you expect? People are going to make jokes.”
Gayle was fined $10,000 for the controversial live interview. You can watch it below again.
