It wouldn’t be Australia Day without the Triple J Hottest 100 playing in the background. From 100 to 1, the station counts down our favourite tunes from the past year, with this event widely recognised as one of the worlds largest music democracies in practice.
This year around 298,851 people voted from over 172 countries around the world. Aided, no doubt, by the prevalence of the Internet and social media, this record number of votes proves that the countdown has come a long way since its establishment in 1988.
The results championed an outstanding number of Australian artists with 54 per cent of the ranking tracks sourced from Down Under. Six of the top Ten tunes were by local artists with the number 1 song, Hoops likewise from an Aussie outfit, The Rubens.
