It’s not even December yet and shops are filled with the scents of tinsel and Christmas trees. Although some have already started to get their Christmas trees up, others are more hesitant. There is a superstition that setting up a Christmas tree before December will bring bad luck. Failing to decorate the tree will also bring evil spirits. Whether you believe these or not is completely up to you.

So the real questions is … when should you put up your Christmas tree?

As Christmas is a religious celebration, trees should be displayed on Advent Sunday. This is the fourth Sunday before Christmas and will fall on any day between 27 November to 3 December. There is obviously no ‘holiday police’ but it seems the general rule of thumb for Australians is December 1 except in South Australia where they will put it up following the Christmas pageant in mid November.

Does putting trees up too early lose the sense of joyfulness for when the day finally does arrive or does it bring excitement throughout the preparation of Christmas?
