J.K. Rowling reveals history of ‘American Hogwarts’

Attention Harry Potter fans!

J.K. Rowling has revealed an exciting American version of Hogwarts on Pottermore. Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is the second short story in a series of new writing from Rowling called, Magic in North America. The series is based on the magical institution located at the highest peak of Mount Greylock in Massachusetts.

Thus far, J.K. has unveiled the magical history of Ilvermorny and how it was was founded. But of course, the best part of all lies in the school houses.

• Horned Serpent – a ‘great horned river serpent with a jewel set into its forehead’
• Pukwudgie – ‘a short, grey-faced, large-eared creature’
• Thunderbird – a creature that ‘can create storms as it flies’
• Wampus – ‘a magical, panther-like creature that is fast, strong and almost impossible to kill’

While there are many differences between Ilvermorny and Hogwarts, one similarity is the Sorting Ceremonies. We’re all familiar with the beloved Sorting Hat at Hogwarts. Well, Ilvermorny students must stand on a symbol of the Gordian Knot in order to determine their school house. Want to know where you belong? Well you’re in luck! You can take a sorting quiz on Pottermore to find out.
