Hoverboards have become the latest craze in Hollywood with the likes of Justin Bieber and Chris Brown posting Instagram videos of their new wheels. Not to mention Jason Derulo’s choreographed hoverboard routine he recently performed at the MTV EMA’s. They have become increasingly popular amongst those willing to pay around $800 to be just like these celebrities.

However the latest devices are not welcome on Australian roads according to NSW Minister for Roads, Duncan Gay. He says they generally have inadequate brakes, require no training and have no warning lights.

Someone riding a hoverboard down a road could score themselves a $637 fine or $319 for on the footpath. Looks like most people will have to stick to their backyard or living room if it’s big enough. Most people might want to second think purchasing this popular Christmas present as Gay says “I don’t want to be the Christmas Grinch, but I want people to know and send a message that these new toys have real safety concerns.”
