Were Eddie McGuire’s drowning comments overblown?

Former St Kilda Star and Collingwood President Eddie McGuire has recently received backlash over the comments he made about wanting to drown Fairfax journalist Caroline Wilson.

McGuire was one of the various personalities who slid into a pool filled with ice water for a motor neurone disease fundraiser called The Big Freeze. He had people talking when he said, “I’ll put in 10 grand straight away, make it 20. And if she stays under, 50. What do you reckon guys?” It seems the comments were made in retaliation to Wilson’s column that suggested McGuire call it quits in his role as Collingwood president.

These comments have also come in line with the White Ribbon Weekend which addresses domestic violence and working to support those dealing with situations themselves.

But has this situation been blown out of proportion? If Eddie McGuire had made these comments to a man, would it have received as much media coverage? I think not. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for women getting the treatment they deserve and men knowing the difference between jovial banter and what is too much. But if women are wanting equal rights as men, why are we making a fuss over this? Aren’t we really un-doing our status as women and admitting we’re subservient to men?

Wilson believed the comments made were casual racism and was agitated wondering how many times we have to draw lines in the sand.
